Telling without Talking - An Introduction to Art Therapy with Children

July 16, 2007, 10.00am – 3.30pm, Chennai

The one-day workshop is aimed at different professionals such as social workers, teachers, psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, therapists and other concerned individuals working with children in traumatic situations.
The facilitators, Dr. Rubin, Dr. Bordonaro and Mrs. Prasad bring with them rich and varied experiences in the field of art therapy. They will begin the session with hands on activity that will introduce participants to the power of visual imagery, and the benefits of art as a way of "telling without talking." After lunch, during which a film will be shown, there will be three presentations on various aspects of art therapy While Mrs. Prasad will demonstrate through illustrations and case studies how art can be used for both diagnosis and therapy with children who have been abused, Dr. Rubin will talk about guidelines for using art in clinical work, regardless of the setting, and will show some examples of work with abused children. Dr. Bordonaro will share her work with children who have been through traumatic experiences.
The day will conclude with questions, discussion, and future directions. The goal of this workshop is to enable participants to better understand how art therapy is used, and to provide them with practical information that will be helpful in their work environments.
