Please also note that our address and telephone number has changed... the new contact is given above in the masthead. Nov 19 is the World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse. In our efforts to create some hoopla around the World Day, we organised a few activities in town and around on the day. Some of you might have come across hoardings on child abuse and our posters in the newspapers (in the New Indian Express and the Hindu), public awareness programme at Spencer's Plaza on Nov 18 and the film and documentory screenings ( Everybody Says I'm Fine; The Children We Sacrifice; Colors Black ) at Sathyam Cinemas and South Indian Film Chambers on Nov 19. We are eager to know your feedback and inputs on the campaign. Some 58.5 per cent of the study group said they were aware of their sexual arousal to younger children by the age of 16, and 92.5 per cent said they were aware by 21. This is not unusual for child sex offenders. The vast majority will indicate, post-treatment, that they were aware of their sexual interest in children before they reached 18. One teacher convicted of downloading child pornography said: "I'd already thought of myself as a paedophile when I was 13. I'd seen that word used or heard the word used on news items and looked it up and thought, 'Oh that's me'. So the decision to coach younger boys was taken when I was 16. Moving towards [ 18 years old] I was thinking, 'Well what am I going to do work-wise, and I thought well, teaching is the best opportunity to be around young boys'." Is ignorance bliss at cost of child's well being? February 14, 2005 A senior teacher from a public school in Ahmedabad narrated this incident last week. An eighth standard student, crying, approached her. Her cousin had been touching her up. She had told her mother. The latest incident happened when her mother was away to attend one of the many marriages. The mother was flabbergasted when the daughter told her.
